Moving to Sweden with children: school, preschool and a calmer start

A family move creates its own timetable. Housing, school records, a municipality’s placement process and a child’s need to feel secure all move at different speeds. The useful starting point is that school access does not have to wait for every adult administrative step to be complete.

01

1. Contact the municipality early

Once you know which municipality you expect to live in, start with its website and local school or preschool team. Municipalities manage applications and placements, but the exact routines and timelines vary. How early a family can submit details and when a child can begin can also differ between EU/EEA families and families moving on work permits. Ask the municipality about its current route for your household rather than assuming a national timetable.

02

2. Bring the documents that help a school understand your child

For children who have attended school abroad, a school may need context on previous learning, age and circumstances before it can plan the right support. Keep school reports, grade information, vaccination records, identity documents and any relevant support plans organised and ready to share when the municipality or school asks for them. Only send what the relevant school or authority has requested.

3. Expect a settling-in process, not an instant perfect fit

Children can start preschool or school after arrival even if they do not yet speak Swedish. Schools provide language support according to the individual child’s needs. The right class, language provision and support plan are decisions for the school, so treat the first placement as a conversation to prepare for rather than a promise you can make from abroad.

4. Separate the school process from adult administration

A child’s school process and the adult population-registration process are related in practice but are not the same question. A municipal online service may usually ask for BankID or Freja eID+, but the municipality can explain alternative routes by email or post when a parent cannot use digital identification yet. Start the conversation early rather than waiting for every adult document, account or service to be in place.

A practical caution

School placement, preschool availability and language support are handled locally. Ask the municipality for its current requirements and avoid promising a particular school place before it has confirmed one.
