This Week in Scandinavia — 20–26 October

Back to Latest News

Late October has a particular rhythm in Scandinavia. The evenings are made for culture, the cities feel more local again, and the best plans tend to be one good thing rather than five rushed ones. This week moves between a citywide cultural night in Göteborg, a landmark concert in Stockholm, autumn half-term plans in Malmö and a theatrical evening at Tivoli.

The Week Ahead

Göteborg · Friday 23 October · Across the city

Kulturnatta — Culture Night

Göteborg's annual Culture Night brings readings, theatre, dance, workshops and open doors to venues around the city. Make an evening of one neighbourhood rather than trying to cross town between every listing. Most programme items are free, but individual organisers set their own admission, booking and capacity rules, so check the programme before you leave.

Malmö · Saturday 24 & Sunday 25 October · 13:00–16:30

Otobong Nkanga — Malmö Konsthall

Otobong Nkanga's large-scale exhibition I dreamt of you in colours continues at Malmö Konsthall through March. This weekend, the Konsthall also hosts free drop-in workshops for all ages, inspired by the exhibition, from 13:00 to 16:30 on both days. They begin with a family tour in Swedish at 13:00 — a good way into serious contemporary art without making it feel like homework.

Stockholm · Thursday 22 October · 20:00

Stevie Wonder — 3Arena

Stevie Wonder brings his Songs In The Key of Life 50th Anniversary Tour to Stockholm. The official venue listing says the evening celebrates the album with a performance in its entirety. If you are thinking of going, check current ticket availability and the venue information before booking.

Copenhagen · Saturday 24 October · From 18:00

Monsters Night Out — Tivoli Gardens

Tivoli's Halloween season gets properly theatrical with a parade through the Gardens, beginning at the Main Entrance at 18:00, followed by scheduled monster appearances on selected rides. Monsters Night Out is included with Tivoli entrance. Go after dark, when the lights and the slightly exaggerated sense of occasion make the whole thing work.

Stockholm · From Friday 23 October · Södra Teatern

Legally Blonde — The Musical

Södra Teatern's Main Stage lists performances of Legally Blonde — The Musical from 23 October through 22 November. The production is in Swedish, and Mosebacke is reason enough to arrive early: it is one of Stockholm's most enjoyable settings for an evening performance. Check the venue's ticket page for current dates and availability.

Malmö · 26–31 October · Folkets Park

Horror Week — Folkets Park

Folkets Park's gently spooky autumn-holiday week begins on Monday, with circus, magic, music, crafts and experiments indoors and around the park. It is designed for children and families, is free to attend and does not offer advance booking. Check the current programme for times and arrive early for anything particularly popular.

Hidden gem of the week

Landscapes Within — Kliger Gallery, Lund

A small art stop with a strong reason to make the train journey: Kliger Gallery's current exhibition brings together Erik Johansson and Gabriel Isak, two Swedish artists with very different but equally precise ways of constructing an image. Landscapes Within runs at Bantorget 4 until 23 January. The gallery is a short walk from Lund Central, so it fits neatly into an unhurried afternoon in the city.

Scandibound for international teams

The unwritten rules of Sweden

Swedish culture is not a checklist, but certain moments can be difficult to read when you are new here: how consensus works, what silence means in a meeting, how feedback is given and what happens in the informal moments around work. I now offer a practical, conversational 90-minute session for international teams, people moving to Sweden and returning Swedes.

Choose one good plan, allow time for a drink or a walk before it, and let the evening do the rest.

Warmly,
Gabrielle
