Maj i Sverige — When the Birches Turn Gold-Green
May in Sweden is a particular kind of magic. The birches are turning that impossible gold-green, the days stretch well past nine in the evening, and the entire country seems to exhale after the long winter. Here's what's worth knowing about this month across Scandinavia.
Stockholm
The French Kiss — Rooftop Brasserie above Hötorget
A new rooftop brasserie has opened above Hötorget, bringing a Parisian sensibility to Stockholm's skyline. The terrace views are exceptional; the steak frites even more so.
Martin Parr at Fotografiska (23 May)
The British documentary photographer's exhibition opens at Fotografiska on 23 May — a sharp, funny, and occasionally uncomfortable look at leisure, class, and the peculiarities of modern life.
adidas Stockholm Marathon (30 May)
One of Europe's most scenic marathons winds through the heart of Stockholm, past the Royal Palace, across bridges, and along the waterfront. Whether you're running or watching, it's a great day to be in the city.
Emberlin Opens July at Stureplan
Stureplan's most anticipated opening of the year is confirmed for July. The high-energy grill house from Björn Frantzén promises open-fire cooking and a social energy that will redefine Stockholm's late-night dining scene.
Göteborg
Göteborgsvarvet Half Marathon (23 May)
The world's largest half marathon returns to Gothenburg, with 60,000 runners taking on the city's bridges and waterfront. A spectacular event even if you're just there for the atmosphere.
Vassen Market (29–31 May)
A curated outdoor market in one of Gothenburg's most characterful neighbourhoods. Local food producers, design makers, and live music across three days.
EXO Restaurant on the 69th Floor of Karlatornet
Scandinavia's highest restaurant is preparing to open this summer. At 220 metres above the city, the views alone are worth the reservation.
Malmö & Skåne
Malmö Garden Show (29–31 May)
The annual garden show transforms Pildammsparken into a showcase of Scandinavian horticulture, landscape design, and outdoor living. A lovely way to spend a May weekend in Malmö.
Sparris & Riesling Pairing (23 May, Österlen)
Skåne's asparagus season is short and glorious. A special tasting event in Österlen pairs the region's white asparagus with Rieslings from local and German producers — the kind of event that reminds you why Skåne is Sweden's food county.
Magnus Nilsson's Furuhem Now Open
The Fäviken legend's new project in Båstad is now welcoming guests. A bakery, hotel, and farm-to-table kitchen rooted in the Bjäre coastline — soulful and worth the drive.
Vineyard Tours at Kullabergs & Arilds
The Kulla Peninsula's vineyards are opening for the season. Kullabergs Vingård — whose vintages were selected for the 2025 Nobel Banquet — is particularly worth a visit as the wine bar opens on Saturdays from early June.
