This Week in Scandinavia — 24–30 August

Back to Latest News

There is a particular quality to late August in Scandinavia: the light softens just enough to remind you that summer is a guest, not a permanent resident. Göteborg is filling with free music and street food as Göteborgskalaset takes over Götaplatsen; Copenhagen's gallery doors are opening for CHART; and Stockholm's performing-arts scene is reclaiming its stages. This is the week the season turns — and it turns beautifully.

The Week Ahead

Göteborg · 27–30 August · Free

Göteborgskalaset — Götaplatsen

Göteborg's free city festival brings music, food and performances to Götaplatsen and the surrounding city centre from Thursday to Sunday. Go without a rigid plan and let the programme find you; it is one of those occasions when the city's public spaces feel especially generous.

Copenhagen · 27–30 August

CHART Art Fair 2026 — Kunsthal Charlottenborg

CHART returns to Charlottenborg on Kongens Nytorv with gallery presentations, talks, performances, screenings and projects in the surrounding public space. The public programme opens on Friday 28 August; book ahead if there is a particular event you want to see.

Stockholm · 26–30 August

Stockholm Fringe Festival

While the larger institutions are warming up for autumn, Stockholm's independent performance scene is already in full swing. STOFF brings theatre, dance, music and experimental work to venues across the city for five days — an excellent week to leave space for a spontaneous evening out.

Göteborg · 28 August–6 September

Gothenburg Fringe Festival

Gothenburg Fringe opens on Friday for ten days of boundary-pushing performance in unexpected venues around the city. Tickets and festival passes are available now, and the programme is best approached with curiosity rather than overplanning.

Tjörn Island · Bohuslän · Through 27 September

Skulptur i Pilane

Pilane's summer exhibition places contemporary work in an ancient coastal landscape on Tjörn. The 2026 programme includes eleven sculptures by Tony Cragg alongside works by other artists. Late August is a good time to go: the park is open daily, the light is extraordinary and the season still has weeks to run.

Copenhagen · Through 30 August

Copenhagen Cooking — Final Days

Copenhagen's citywide food festival enters its final days with more than 100 meals, tastings, talks, workshops and outdoor events across the city. Check the live programme and book promptly: the festival runs only until Sunday.

Hidden Gem of the Week

Ringön, Göteborg — a waterside industrial district in transition

On Thursday 27 August, Bryggan at Ringön hosts a concert with Cleo. It is a good reason to cross the river: the former industrial area mixes working warehouses, water, creative studios and occasional pop-ups. Go for the music, then take time to notice a side of Göteborg that is still finding its shape.

Scandibound Experience

Swedish Culture & Society

Late August is when international teams often arrive for the new season: new colleagues, new offices and new social codes. Sweden rewards people who understand how things work in practice — consensus, hierarchy, decision-making and the quieter rhythms of professional life.

This focused session is for international teams, corporate groups and individuals who want a more useful introduction to the unwritten rules of Swedish culture.

Marina Abramović: Seven Deaths at Cisternerne

If you are in Copenhagen this week and you do one thing, make it this. Cisternerne is an extraordinary subterranean space in Søndermarken, and Abramović's cinematic opera installation is made for it. Seven Deaths runs as a continuous sequence of seven films, so allow time for the full experience and book a timed ticket before you go.
