FÖRSÄKRINGSKASSAN — JOINING THE SWEDISH SOCIAL INSURANCE SYSTEM
Being registered with Skatteverket does not automatically settle every social-insurance question. Försäkringskassan makes its own assessment of whether you are insured in Sweden and eligible for particular benefits. This guide is a starting point, not a benefits decision.
WHY YOU NEED TO REGISTER SEPARATELY
Folkbokföring at Skatteverket is not the same as being registered with Försäkringskassan. To be covered by Swedish social insurance, you need to be working, studying, or otherwise connected to Sweden. Försäkringskassan determines your right to benefits such as:
- Benefits that may include child allowance or housing allowance, if the requirements are met
- Parental benefit and child allowance
- Housing benefit and other allowances
STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE
- 1. Check what applies to you: Families moving with children under 16 are contacted after population registration. Others can use the agency’s current e-service when relevant, for example when applying for an EHIC or a benefit.
- 2. Submit accurate information: Use Försäkringskassan’s current e-service or form and provide the information requested for your own situation.
- 3. Keep the processes separate: Population registration, healthcare access and social-insurance benefits are related in practice but are not one automatic decision.
- 4. Wait for the assessment: Processing times vary. Read the agency’s current guidance and respond if it asks for more information.
MY ADVICE
Common mistake
Do not assume that a move automatically creates full coverage for every benefit. Healthcare and social-insurance entitlements depend on the facts of your case, including work, residence and any cross-border insurance position.
Expert tip
Before cancelling any existing cover, check what applies to your specific move with Försäkringskassan and your insurer. If a gap in cover would be serious for you, get professional insurance advice.
The emotional side
The long waiting period can create anxiety, and that is completely normal. Find out where your nearest healthcare centre is and what applies for emergency care (call 1177 for advice). Having a plan reduces stress considerably.
Not sure this applies to YOUR situation?
The exact steps, timelines, and required documents differ depending on whether you're an EU citizen, moving on a work permit, self-sufficient, or a student.
