FOLKBOKFÖRING — YOUR KEY TO SWEDEN
Registering your move with the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) is often an important early step for someone returning to Sweden to live here. A personnummer can make many everyday systems easier, but healthcare, banking, school access and social insurance are separate processes with their own rules. Use this as personal orientation alongside current official guidance.
WHY THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP
Without being registered (folkbokförd) and having a personnummer, many everyday processes can be more difficult, including:
- Get a Swedish ID card or BankID
- Access some digital healthcare and banking services
- Complete the administrative side of school or preschool arrangements
- Sign most contracts or subscriptions
- Use almost any digital service in Sweden
STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE
- 1. Notify Skatteverket: You can do this digitally via Skatteverket's e-service, up to 14 days before you arrive or after you have arrived. You will need to provide your future address in Sweden.
- 2. Provide your Swedish address and evidence: The e-service asks for the address where you will live and supporting documents. What Skatteverket needs can vary by your residence basis and circumstances, so follow the current instructions in the service.
- 3. Visit a service centre (identity check): Once in Sweden, you and any family members moving with you normally attend an identity check in person. Bring original identity documents and, where applicable, your Swedish residence permit card. Book through the official system.
- 4. Wait for the decision: Processing times vary and Skatteverket makes the final decision. Keep your contact details and postbox information current, and respond promptly if the agency requests more information.
MY ADVICE
Common mistake
Your address needs to reflect where you genuinely intend to live. Do not assume that one document or living arrangement will be sufficient for every case; follow the current information requested in Skatteverket’s service.
Expert tip
Book your identity-check appointment through the official system and bring the original identity documents that apply to you. Check the current Skatteverket instructions before travelling, particularly if a family member has a different citizenship or residence basis.
The emotional side
The waiting period can be frustrating. Think of this as the first major bureaucratic hurdle. Once it is cleared, everything else becomes significantly easier. Use the waiting time to plan your next steps.
Not sure this applies to YOUR situation?
The exact steps, timelines, and required documents differ depending on whether you're an EU citizen, moving on a work permit, self-sufficient, or a student.
