WHY BANKID IS ESSENTIAL
BankID is your digital identity. It is used to:
- Pay bills and use Swish (Sweden's mobile payment system)
- Log in to 1177 Vårdguiden, pharmacies, and all government agencies
- Sign contracts and file tax returns
- Access almost every digital service in Sweden
STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE
- 1. Check the bank’s requirements: Banks assess identity and customer information individually. A personnummer and Swedish identity documents can make the process easier, but the exact requirements differ.
- 2. Gather relevant documents: Ask the bank what it needs before an appointment. This may include identity documents, proof of address, income information and information about why you need the account.
- 3. Speak to more than one bank if necessary: A bank’s ability to offer an appointment or product can vary. Keep a clear record of the documents you have provided.
- 4. Treat BankID as a separate bank product: A bank decides whether and when it can issue BankID. Do not rely on having it before your bank has confirmed the arrangement.
MY ADVICE
Common trap (Catch-22)
A Swedish bank account and BankID can be harder to arrange in the first weeks than people expect. Avoid commitments that require one until your bank has confirmed what it can offer.
Expert tip
Contact banks directly and ask for their current process for someone in your situation. Keep the conversation factual and be ready to provide the documents they request.
The emotional side
This is often the most frustrating step — you feel locked out of digital society. Allow yourself to be annoyed, but see it as a temporary hurdle. Once this is resolved, an enormous piece of the puzzle falls into place.
Not sure this applies to YOUR situation?
The exact steps, timelines, and required documents differ depending on whether you're an EU citizen, moving on a work permit, self-sufficient, or a student.
