THE SWEDEN LETTER

May 2026 · News, culture, and happenings from Scandinavia

When the Birches Turn Green Again

There is a particular kind of magic that arrives in Sweden every May. The birch trees — bare and patient all winter — suddenly burst into the most tender, luminous green you have ever seen. The light stretches past nine in the evening. Café chairs appear on pavements overnight. Somewhere, someone is grilling on a balcony, and the smell drifts through an open window like a memory you didn't know you'd kept.

Whether you are planning a visit, dreaming of relocating, or simply curious about Scandinavia — we hope this letter brings a little of that feeling to you. The warmth of a Swedish spring, the hum of a country waking up, and a reminder that there is always something new to discover here.

Life in Sweden: The Art of the Swedish Spring

May in Sweden is the month of valborg bonfires, the first outdoor fika, and cycling to work without a jacket. The Swedish relationship with nature — enshrined in allemansrätten — means rapeseed fields in Skåne, kayaking through Stockholm's archipelago, and mountain trails in Sälen are all freely accessible. May is also asparagus season, with Michelin stars scattered from Simrishamn to Stockholm.
